Which fade are you after?

Not sure what to ask for? Tap a style to see where the fade starts on the head, a cut from our chairs where we have a photo, and the words to say when you sit down. Every one is $30.

Teenager with a textured fringe and a low taper, side view
Textured fringe over a low taper. Cut at Milton Salon.

Low taper fade

Where it startsAt the sideburns and the neckline, nowhere else

The hair comes down to skin just around the ears and at the back of the neck, and everything above keeps its length. There is no hard line, so it grows out softly. It suits a textured fringe, curls or a longer top.

Tell your barber“Low taper fade, skin at the sideburns and neckline, leave the length on top.”

Man with brushed-back greying hair and tapered sides, side view
Brushed-back grey with a tapered side. Cut at Milton Salon.

Taper fade

Where it startsAround the ears and down the back of the neck

A taper fade haircut shortens the hair gradually at the edges and stops before bare skin, so it looks neat, not shaved. It is the quiet choice and easy to wear to the office.

Tell your barber“Taper on the sides and back, no skin, clean up the neckline.”

Where a low fade sits. We don’t have a photo of one from our chairs yet, so here is the diagram.

Low fade

Where it startsJust above the top of the ear

The fade starts about level with the top of the ear and follows the hairline around the back. You get the contrast of a fade and keep more hair on the sides than a mid or high fade leaves.

Tell your barber“Low fade, starting just above the ear, down to skin. (Say a number one or a half guard if you’d rather not see skin.)”

Young man with a textured quiff and a mid fade, side view in the shop
Textured quiff over a mid fade. Cut at Milton Salon.

Mid fade

Where it startsHalfway up the side, around the temple

The middle ground, and a good first fade. It starts around the temple and blends down. It works with a quiff, a brush-back or a textured top.

Tell your barber“Mid fade from the temple, blended into the top.”

Man with a short crop and a high skin fade, standing by the front counter
Short crop with a high skin fade. Cut at Milton Salon.

High fade

Where it startsUp where the side of the head turns into the top

The fade climbs almost to the corner of the head, so very little length is left on the sides. It has the most contrast of the three heights and suits a short crop.

Tell your barber“High fade, taken up to the corners, skin at the bottom.”

Blond quiff with a skin fade. Cut at Milton Salon.

Skin fade (bald fade)

Where it startsAny height, taken down to bare skin

A fade becomes a skin fade when the bottom goes to bare skin instead of a short guard. Skin fade and bald fade are two names for the same cut. It looks sharpest fresh from the chair and is the first to soften as it grows.

Tell your barber“Mid skin fade, bare skin at the bottom.”

Man with curly hair, a burst fade and a trimmed beard, brushed off after the cut
Curly top with a burst fade and a trimmed beard. Cut at Milton Salon.

Burst fade

Where it startsIn a half circle around the ear

A burst fade haircut curves around the ear and leaves length at the back of the neck, so the hair seems to burst out from behind the ear. It is made for curls, a mohawk or a frohawk.

Tell your barber“Burst fade around the ear, keep the length at the back.”

Where a drop fade sits. We don’t have a photo of one from our chairs yet, so here is the diagram.

Drop fade

Where it startsHigher at the temple, dropping behind the ear

The fade line starts up at the temple, then drops down behind the ear toward the nape, following the curve of the head. It’s a softer shape than a straight line across and suits most lengths on top.

Tell your barber“Drop fade, curving down behind the ear.”

Where a temp fade sits. We don’t have a photo of one from our chairs yet, so here is the diagram.

Temp fade (temple fade)

Where it startsAt the temples and around the neckline

A small fade at the temples and the back of the neck, usually finished with a sharp line-up. You’ll also hear it called a temple fade or a Brooklyn fade. Pick it for clean edges that leave the sides alone.

Tell your barber“Temp fade with a line-up at the front.”

Walked in without an appointment and got seated pretty quickly. My barber listened to exactly what I wanted and delivered an amazing fade. Great attention to detail and fair prices. Highly recommend!

Gus did a great mid fade and haircuts, very efficient and clean cut! Thanks!

I’ve tried many barbershops in Fulton area since 2013. None of them know how to give you a proper fade! None! Until I found this place. Ask for Zee, Gus, or Farzan best barbers in north Atlanta.

Fade questions

What people ask at the counter. If yours isn’t here, call (770) 417-8090.

How much is a fade at Milton Salon?

$30, whichever fade you ask for: low, mid, high, skin, taper, burst or drop. A men’s haircut without a fade is $25 and a kids’ haircut is $20. A higher fade or a skin fade costs the same. Every price is listed.

What’s the difference between a fade and a taper?

A taper only shortens the hair at the sideburns and the back of the neck, and usually stops before bare skin. A fade goes further up the sides and blends down to very short hair or skin. A low taper fade sits between the two: a taper’s footprint, taken down to skin. Both are $30 here.

How do I ask my barber for a fade?

Say where it should start (low, mid or high), how short the bottom goes (skin, or a guard number), and what you want on top. A photo helps more than anything. Each style above has a line you can read out.

Should I get a low or a mid fade?

A low fade keeps more hair around the ears and is the easier one to wear to work. A mid fade has more contrast and suits a shorter top or a quiff. If you are not sure, start low. Your barber can take it higher next time.

How long does a fade stay sharp?

A skin fade softens first, because regrowth shows fastest against bare skin. Tapers and low fades grow out more gently. A Clipper Beard Trim is $12 if you also want to tidy your beard.

Can I walk in for a fade?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome every day, and we are open Sunday 10 to 5. Appointments are recommended, so if you want a particular barber or a set time, Book now first.

Do you cut fades for kids?

Yes. Fades for boys are cut here too. The $25 Kid’s Cut does not include fades. A Fade Haircut is $30, and you can see our work in the gallery.
